Brewery Kestemont’s Old Style Kriek, crafted with Schaarbeek cherries, is a variation of the brewery’s renowned Old Kriek. This beer is made using 100% organic Schaarbeek cherries, all grown on-site. Once abundant in the region for producing Old Kriek, Schaarbeek cherries have become increasingly rare. In response, Brewery Kestemont has taken to cultivating these cherries on fields near the brewery.
The whole cherries are fermented in oak barrels with lambic that is at least one year old. After six months of maturation, this transforms into Old Kriek, featuring approximately 400 grams of cherries per liter of beer. The second fermentation in the bottle naturally carbonates the beer, resulting in a delicately smooth taste and a characteristic foam head. The beer offers a harmonious balance of sweet and sour flavors, complemented by the authenticity of the Pajot kriek.
As Schaarbeek cherries continue to grow rarer, Brewery Kestemont is proud to preserve this original cherry variety, integral to the region’s fruit beers.
